This Hyper Jig is a really good versatile reel that won't break the bank and it will last as long as you want it to.
We trialed this reel in Victoria on snapper and trialed it up here in cairns on Coral trout and other species jigging on the reefs north of Port Douglas without any dramas , It is well made and a lot of thought has gone into size and strength of the Hyper Jig 6000 and i will say this , i don't often praise a reel but i will tell you this and not because i sell them but because i believe in this jigging reel and without a doubt probably one of the high shelf reels that sits with some of the best reels around without the high price tag.

SOOTIE HUNTING

We did a run down to the Mulgrave River a few days ago as the weather was absolutely fantastic.

The fish we were after were sooties or Black Bream which are a tuff fighting species usually found in the upper reaches of the fresh water systems of the tropical north as well as Tinaroo Dam on the Atherton Tablelands where they can grow to a good size of around 3-4 kg. Sooties love hiding in snags or under cover from a fallen tree that is in the water , reason being so when they hit your lure , popper or bait they take off at 100 miles an hour , totally mindblowing for such a small fish. this will be my third time going after this species and each time i look forward to the hit they give on every strike of the bait or lure .

The spot we had chosen was about 300-400 meters from the Bridge at Goldsborough just south of cairns on the Gillies Highway. The water dropped off the banks just under a few willow trees where the water starts to go a dark colour black even thats where it gets deep with slow movement , carefully watch the surface and you’ll see bits of debri drop off the tree’s and the sooties will come up to investigate that’s when we threw out a couple of lures tied to 8 lb line , a 5 kilo setup is pretty much it for the sooties but I would go slightly higher if fishing Tinaroo Dam these sort of outfits you can get at any reputable outlet , like I have always said to all our customers do your homework before you go fishing , these lures are fantastic for bream and other fresh & salt water species .

                     So we sat and waited until we could see a boil or two from sooties checking out the surface for food bugs or whatever dropped from the over hanging trees , a couple of seconds is all it took on the first cast we had them hitting our lures at a hundred miles an hour like they were smashing these things, it was as if they hadn’t been eating for a week and the thing with sooties or black bream is that they are as tuff as nails and love a good fight.
                 Sooties like any other fish will go for different coloured baits and lures and poppers depending on the enviroment they live in , for instants if the water colour is brown or really dark try a light brown lure or even Meat as in flesh they will go for that as well or if the water is clear go for a brightly coloured lure that usually works on them , so pretty much trial run what you have , if you don't have it go and get it from your local tackle store .

                 We tried different colours and they all got hit hard , we had a good two hours of fun with catching and throwing them back again basically testing out our tackle until someone fell in , well didn’t that dampened the moment,

                 We then headed down stream about 800 meters to another spot that looked pretty good as far as depth of water goes. Threw out the lures and it would of taken about 10 minutes before something started to hit my wet buddies lure. The brown lure was getting all the attention even when I cast right next to his they just ignored mine and still kept on hitting his lure. Thats where you get your information from with sooties what they like and dislike on the day your fishing for them. If your lucky a local might fill you in on what there hitting.

                 Then bang I mean the rod went down like it was going to turn into a pretzel , although it was only a light rod still this fish had his number and started peeling the little spinner like it was hooked to a frieght train , it took off about 10 meters before he had to pull it up or it was in the snags and bye bye, it took him only a minute or two to get it in and it was a sootie weighing in at around a good 2 kilos which for that particular area is a very good size sootie or Black Bream as some call them . There were others there but a bit smaller in size .

                    We tried the upper reaches that day and not much luck just a few Strikes here and there, overall we had a great day on the Mulgrave River and we will definitely do it again. Tinaroo is looking good for a day we will hopefully get some bigger fish up there soon..

                We don’t claim to be pro’s at fishing nor will we ever no matter how much information we gather or know , there is no such thing in our book as we are all learning something different every single day. Catching fish of all species every day is one big learning experience. We just love to fish and if i didn’t have to sleep I would just keep on fishing til the day I die.

                              So remember do your homework on the species you are after buy your gear from your tackle supplier and get info on where and what they are biting from a good source .

Mangrove jack fishing

We hit the Daintree river at the end of the last bit of rain we had and done pretty good with the bream , Mangrove Jacks and even hooked up on a Barra that we just missed on getting into the boat.

We headed towards the mouth of the Daintree river with catching some top of the line Barra in mind.

We ended up probably around half a click from the mouth on the left side facing the mouth of the river just on the edge from the shallows anchored for around 21/2 hours. I had a berlie pot which was around 8 inches long 4 inches wide pretty much a rectangle made of stainless mesh with a good length of rope tied to it as we use this same setup on the reefs and works very well.

With the berlie I use it mainly consist’s of mashed Pillies , fish offcuts , chook pellets and Tuna oil.

We threw it over the side to get our berlie trail going til it hit the bottom then just lifted it off the bottom about 4-6 feet as too keep the muddies off it.

The tide would have been about 2 hours before the top so we were looking at getting around 4.5 hours in of good quality fishing time.

I was using an Aluminium F series spinning reel by tomman with a First stick spinning rod by Seahawk Tackle great combo a bit like a third arm .

My mate Paul was using Black Rose by Lemax with a Pro 300X spinning reel by Ajiking with 20LB line on both outfits and a good trace with gang hooks for the whole pilly or one hook head down and rubber band the tail .

15 minutes into it we had a couple of touches on the rods more so just curious ones at that .

Half an hour had gone by with nothing then pauls rod did had a strike I mean it was a big hit , that reel was screaming like it was not going to let up at all , it was heading for the shallows trying to get him snagged on mangrove roots so he hit the drag a touch more which pulled it up to a slow run then it stopped for a few seconds and he give it a bit of a tug on the rod and off it went again , by this time he had been fighting this fish for a good 10 minutes so I gave him a bit of flak about “hell mate you need some help or what” lol he gave me the filthiest look and by the time he got it anywhere near the boat his face was red and his knuckles were white as I couldn’t stop silently laughing about it then there was colour, thank god it was a good flash of silver I thought it was a salmon then up and out of the water it went right in front of my face it was a big Barra probably one of the biggest I had seen in a long time then down it went straight under the boat out the otherside and bang it broke the line, I said “wow dude that was a really good view ” , just to see that barra so close up and out of the water dancing on its tail still hooked up was mind blowing for me.

Paul just looked down to the bottom of the boat and shook his head in disbelief looking at his limp fishing line , not a lot I could say but “next time buddy next time” .

So he baited up a pilly dipped it in Tuna Oil and cast into the deeper section hoping to hook another big one.

The water had a slight discoloration to it after the rain which helps in hooking up on your fish as it’s a bit harder for them to see what it is that way they will just hit it as hard as or just sit and swallow it not moving at all till you wind it in realizing that you have an estuary cod on the end of your line.

The berlie trail was starting to work an hour after we anchored and I was getting a few interesting hits with real short runs then they would drop it and hit it again , after about several goes at it i hooked up onto something hard and fast , the runs were very hard but all over the place back and forth under around the boat it went, then straight out towards the middle of the river in pure desperation to get free , it wasn’t white knuckle fighting but it was a great fight with the landing of a 6 kg mangrove jack very nice fish for the first landed one in the boat lol , Paul just looked and mumbled something , he caught a couple of good ones with one just hitting the 6.2 kilo mark but all in all a few nice fish .We had caught a few good mangrove jacks that day mainly in the first two hours before the top of the tide and 2 hours after the top of the tide the same applies to the bottom of the tide as well , I have seen jacks in pairs and in schools of around 10 to 12 at one time moving along the river banks or the edges of shallows at fast pace.

Mangrove jacks have a hearty appetite they will eat just about anything when there hungry from Squid to pillies I have tried all sorts of lures and plastics but nothing will beat a good looking pilly dipped in Tuna Oil that’s for sure on the reef or in the rivers.

Red Snapper or mangrove jacks call them what you like they run like a Mack truck and try anything to break your line they are line strippers and dirty fighters found in warmer waters of our rivers and reefs in Queensland , when going after these predators you need to be the Boss with the big stick or you could end up losing the fish . They will grow up to 10 plus kilos but the most common size is around the 5 -7 kilo mark. Look for snags along the river banks or fallen trees in the water or just look for holes on your sounder near river bends or where fresh water meets salt water etc you will find them in one of those places.

CATCHING A COBIA OUR LAST TRIP

First of all When going after Cobia make sure you have the right gear (Fishing Tackle)
, don't think for a minute that K-Mart has got the goods for this type of fishing because
believe me they don't . Get the proper gear and info from your local tackle shop.

The Cobia is one of the toughest fighting fish that love the tropical waters and mostly hang around wrecks, navigation marks, bouys and reefs, they can weigh up to 130 or more pounds the biggest i have seen caught was 40 lb which is a pretty good size fish.
The rod we used was a 5'6" 25 KG, PE 10+ and was a Jig King by Lemax Pro,
a totally brilliant stik made of the highest grade materials availiable has been on the market for a while now and has proven itself time and time again with our local and interstate fishermen and women.
40 LB line was used wrapped on a wahoo 8000 spool which together make this combo one awesome piece of tackle.
The Wahoo 8000 has the insides of a 4x4 Winch and the pulling power of a freight train Slightly exagerated of course but you know you have some heavy artillery when you hold it in your hands dropping that gold jig over the side into the black on blue depths of far northern waters.
I have been to several places looking for Cobia wether it be surface fishing or bottom fishing and have done pretty well on catching a few, more have escaped there fate than have had the pleasure of hitting the floor of my boat as they are one of the toughest fighting Mack Trucks i have ever had the pleasure hooking up on.
The best place i know of is north of Daintree river about an hours run we call it black rock comes up out of the sea like a Shrine deep water in some areas and if you really look at your sounder there is one or two holes as you move away from it east and one north, they are pretty much just shallow holes around 10-15 Feet deeper than the sourrounding area a bit hard to find with the sand movements etc.
We attached a couple of 80 Gm Mig Alien jigs one Green and Silver T006 and the other was a Red T008 that we were testing to our lines and dropped them over the side with plenty of jerks off the bottom every 4-8 seconds then Bang, took around half an hour to hook up on one and it hit hard and fast looked like the rod was gonna break , that Wahoo 8000 was Screaming loud as for a good 5 minutes til it started to slow up but not for long it just kept on fighting , we knew it was not gonna give up so all you can do is fight back and hope you get it in the boat, eventually we did was the only one for the day but caught a few coral trout and two red emperors , the main thing with Cobia is don't drift off mind wise if you do you will get caught out ( Trust me) i know. They will peel your line like it was nothing fast and furious they will try anything to get loose under around the boat and anchor rope trying to break your line , when fishing the reef you need to be on top of them the whole time not giving them an inch. Not like a Mac Tuna they just want to run in one direction and my god they can run.
Be very careful when you lift the Cobia into the boat as i have seen a lot of damage done by Cobia to man and boat on various occasions
Took about 15 minutes to get that Cobia in the boat once in you need to bleed it asap and put it on ice making sure you put sea water in with your ice to get it to a point of nearly freezing your catch then it will stay fresh all day so you can go on fishing or move somewhere else looking for more elusive Cobia.
Best baits to use for Cobia are Bright coloured Jigs, live baits and even just plain old pillies dipped in Tuna oil as we have tried everything with these Cobias and most work well, jigs take a little longer than a tuna oiled pilchard as the oil will create a trail for them and other fish to follow but in the end they all work.
With regards to eating they are in the high rankings of quality table fish. Personally i love em.
Try a little Garlic Salt with italian Parsely on the BBQ with freshly squeeze lemon juice.

PACIFIC 11 BY SEAHAWK TACKLE

I don't know tell me i'm a bit behind but the PACIFIC 11 is probably old school when it comes to overhead reels .
The strength and versatility of this reel is probably a breath of fresh air compared to all these you beaut reels getting around , i like it as it is simple to use , not much can go wrong with it due to the fact that it has simple parts to it wash it when ya done and you shouldn,t have a prob with it as long as you use it accordingly to manufacturing specs.
We tested it along with a couple of others and we will get to them soon.
This reel is pretty basic comes with 3 Ball Bearings , Power handle , Drag Alarm , Aluminium Spool , Multi stops anti reverse , line Capacity 15LB / 450YDS Ratio 4.2:1 and thats it .
Like the old reels it worked just fine and is a pretty tough piece of Armory.
We threw on 20 lb line for our tests and it went pretty well. pulled in the usual fish and the biggest was a cobia at around 8 Kg near black rock , has some pretty deep holes around there .
A couple of good size sharks as well which tested this one out pretty good and we didn't have to throw on the water either.

But all in all it was not a bad reel...

Lemax and Ajiking Combo

The two new combos we have are a Wahoo 8000 grafted to a 6'3" 2 piece Jig King and a Pro jigger on a 6'3" 2 piece Slimmax Jigging Rod.

The First combo is the Wahoo 8000 Extremely suitable for all your heavy duty jigging and popping would have to be one of the best gut wrenching Game Spinning Reels i have ever used in a long time. When i hit the water this is the first piece of tackle i will grab for , The Wahoo 8000 Game Spinning reel is Built for freight train Kingies , samson , sharks , big GT's , Tuna even small marlin. I've used this combo on a lot of fishing trips here in the Far North and never had a problem with it to date with the 30 KG drag that is more than what the average fishermen or women would need and stainless gearing there is plenty of grunt in this reel to take on just about anything . Built for the kill with high strength aluminium body , large capacity cnc spool , precision cut screw in cnc power handle , power drag system with 10 piece T300 carbon washer , maximum drag force power is 30 KG , 9 ball bearing system with one way clutch bearing , water proof system construction .

The Jig king by Lemax

is truely in its own class of rods built as a solid rod which makes it an excellent rod for those who are just getting into the jigging side of fishing , not like your graphite rods the Jig King is a bit heavier , that to me means strength and durability for this rod in particular comes with Graphite reel seat , SIC guides , stainless gimbal and a very nice looking rod the 60-80 lb has a max jig weight of 300g.

The second combo is the Pro jigger and the Slimmax jigging rod

This Pro Jigger is a mini sized crane . One hell of a little jigging reel that wieghs only 400g . This is one reel that does not sit long on the shelf , Plenty of power in this little reel which sits in the palm of your hand. The Pro Jigger's twin-position machine-cut power handle and knob and easy access lever drag system guarantees a comfortable and easily adaptable line of attack for those bigguns. For a little reel it certainly packs some punch with action that even the fussiest of fishermen would love. Has a two position power handle and the drag is very easily accessed and the power handle comes with a T- Bar handle or ball handle, i would go for the T-bar handle due to the bigger hands and the T-bar would suit a lot of women that love there fishing so get get a very good grip pulling in reds and some nice GT's. These reels are also availiable in 9 colours.
Consisting of 6 Japanese stainless steel ball bearings , Precision machined T6061 aircraft grade aluminium , Two position machined cut power handle and knob , High-speed gear ratio 6.0:1 , Lightweight and compact - 400g , Korean made carbon drag washer for better drag performance ,maximum drag power up to 15kg from tests i've done i would say more like 10-12 KG but overall a great jigging reel .

The Lemax Slimmax Jigging Rod is at the top of my list for one of the best durable rods around and is a nice addition to the Lemax range and if you ever wanted a ferrari this is it .
From the spinning or overhead series we chose the overhead 6'3" 2 piece 40-60 lb for the pro jigger perfect if you want to change to a bigger overhead as well . This Slimmax comes with Fuji alconite guide system , fuji gimbal and BRC cap , power handle and joint system , high density EVA handle , fuji TCS/PSS Gold label reel seat , Super graphite blank construction + SE concept design , professionally designed GCF ( Gradual Curve Fighting ) Action. PE6-8, max jig weight 450g , B.DRAG 8-10kg , X-FAST.
This combo is also availiable with the Slimmax 5'6" PE 5-6 , 6-8 kg B/Drag , 1 piece, Fast rod.
Either way both combo's are totally excellent rod and reel setups.
Back to the Wahoo 8000 i have two spools loaded so i can change from 30 lb to 80 lb just makes it easier in the long run.
The reason being i have been caught out a couple of times , if the fish your after aren't biting and you decide to go for something bigger then i know i'm all good to go , less tackle ........
